In 2010 the committee decided the money raised would be donated to the Scugog Memorial Library Expansion and Autism Ontario - Durham Region Chapter. The reason for these choices was simple: we wanted to support a local charity, and program for special needs people. Libraries will always have a place in our lives. Many of us know someone who has a family member with some form of Autism. We've all heard about the lack of government funding for programs for these individuals. We decided to help in a small way. When all was said and done, we were able to give a total of $10,000 to these two charities. None of the money raised is used for administration purposes.
For 2011, the committee has decided the proceeds will go to Durham Dragons Special Hockey. The Dragons, as they are affectionately know, recently started season 16 at the Ajax Community Centre. The players range in age from 5 years to 65 years old. They are divided onto 5 teams in 3 divisions, Junior, Intermediate and Senior. The Junior Dragons are the new players, who are learning to skate and play hockey. Age doesn't matter. The oldest Dragon is on one of the Junior teams! The Intermediates know the game, but are working on their hockey skills. The Seniors are the ones who have the knowledge and skills. All of the players are developmentally challenged. Some have learning disabilities. Others have Down Syndrome or are autistic. Some have cerebral palsy. Others may have epilepsy. Because of these challenges, they are unable to play in other organized leagues. For more information about the Dragons, visit www.durhamdragonsspecialhockey.com. The Dragons is part of Special Hockey International, which is made up of teams like the Dragons from across North America and England! Durham Dragons Special Hockey relies on fund raising, player fees and community support. The committee was extremely excited to present the Durham Dragons Special Hockey organization with a cheque for $15,000!! We could not have done it without the teams that entered, the companies that sponsored us, the people that bought 50/50 tickets and bid on silent auction items. Thank you all!
